NHL suspends Flyers D Jones for two games

Oct 29, 2007 - 7:29 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Randy Jones was suspended for two games, without pay, by the NHL on Monday for his check against the Boston Bruins' Patrice Bergeron on Saturday.

In a 2-1 road win, Jones was handed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct in the first period after hitting Bergeron from behind into the endboards, causing the Bruins player to lose consciousness before he was taken from the ice on a stretcher.

The 22-year-old Bergeron was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken nose.

"While it is my determination that Jones did not intend to injure his opponent, he did deliver a hard check to a player who was in a vulnerable position," NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said. "There have been suggestions by some that this hit was comparable to incidents earlier this season where players received significant game suspensions for blows to the head. These comparisons and suggestions are wrong."

Due to the suspension, Jones will forfeit $5,614.98. It will start with Thursday's road game at Montreal and includes Friday's meeting at Washington.
