Flames sign G Kiprusoff to multi-year contract extension

Oct 29, 2007 - 11:11 PM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) - The Calgary Flames signed goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff to a multi-year contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed,but CHQR Radio in Calgary reported the deal for six years and $35 million.

"I would like to thank the Calgary Flames owners for making this long-term commitment to me and my family so we can remain in this city and be part of this organization," Kiprusoff said. "I look forward to the responsibility and challenge that comes with this contract. Calgary is a loyal hockey community that expects and deserves the very best from its home team."

Kiprusoff, who was eligible for free agency at the end of the season, was acquired by the Flames in 2003 and helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004.

"The Calgary Flames ownership group has made a huge commitment to Miikka and we expect him to be a major contributor to the success of our organization for years to come," Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said.

Kiprusoff is a two-time All-Star and won the Vezina Trophy after the 2005-06 season, when he posted a 42-20-11 record with a 2.07 goals-against average.

The 31-year-old goaltender is the franchise leader in shutouts with 21 and is 5-3-3 this season with a 3.15 goals-against average.
