Bruins place G Fernandez from injured reserve

Nov 9, 2007 - 10:21 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins on Friday placed goaltender Manny Fernandez and left wing Shawn Thornton on the injured reserve list.

Fernandez has been sidelined with a left knee strain that he suffered during a practice on October 30, while Thornton is expected to be out four to six weeks with a broken bone in his left foot.

The 33-year-old Fernandez is 2-2-0 with a 3.93 goals-against average in four games this season.

Struggling for several seasons to find stability in net, the Bruins acquired Fernandez from the Minnesota Wild on July 1 for right wing Petr Kalus and a fourth-round pick in 2009.

Fernandez was 22-16-1 with two shutouts and a 2.55 goals-against average in 2006-07. He also teamed with Niklas Backstrom, who led the league in GAA (1.97) and save percentage (.929), to win the Jennings Trophy.

An original member of the Wild, Fernandez has a career record of 127-115-32 with 13 shutouts and a 2.49 GAA in 297 games with the Dallas Stars, Wild and Bruins. The nephew of Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire, he was a third-round pick of the Quebec Nordiques in 1992.

Thornton, who was signed by the Bruins as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has not scored a point in 13 games this season.
