Kovalchuk suspended one game
Jan 23, 2008 - 10:36 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Atlanta Thrashers left wing Ilya Kovalchuk has been suspended one game for his hit from behind on New York Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival in Tuesday's contest at Madison Square Garden.With 36 seconds left in the first period, Kovalchuk slammed Rozsival into the boards. He was assessed a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.
Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement and based on his average salary, Kovalchuk with forfeit $34,224.60.
The league's second-leading scorer with 63 points, Kovalchuk will sit out on Thursday, when the Thrashers again visit the Rangers.
New York won Tuesday's game, 4-0.
