Ducks RW Selanne returns to the ice

Feb 6, 2008 - 12:21 AM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- Anaheim Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne made his season debut on Tuesday against the New York Islanders, marking the first time he has played professionally since Game Five of the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals.

An unrestricted free agent, Selanne signed a one-year contract with the defending champion Ducks on January 28 after sitting out the first half of the season while contemplating retirement.

The 37-year-old registered a team-high 94 points for Anaheim last season and finished third in the league with 48 goals.

Known as the "Finnish Flash," Selanne also led the Ducks in power-play goals (25) and game-winners (10) in 2006-07 while becoming the oldest player in NHL history to score more than 45 goals in a season.

In 21 playoff contests, Selanne registered five goals and 10 assists, including the overtime game-winner in Game Five of the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings.

A 10-time All-Star and former Maurice Richard Trophy winner, Selanne has recorded 540 goals and 595 assists in 14 seasons with four different clubs.
