Rangers sign D Girardi

Feb 16, 2008 - 6:52 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Rangers on Saturday signed defenseman Dan Girardi, who has played in all 59 games this season, to a contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move came two days after the Rangers signed goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to a six-year, $41.2 million contract.

Girardi, 23, ranks second among Rangers defensemen in goals (eight) and points (22) and is third in assists with 14. In addition, the Ontario native is tied for the team lead in blocked shots (86) while ranking second in average icetime per game (21:16).

Girardi signed with the Rangers as a free agent on July 1, 2006 and played a key part in the team's run to the playoffs last season, as New York went 19-9-6 following his debut on January 27.

Girardi played in 10 playoff games last season.
