Selanne nets Ducks' milestone

Feb 18, 2008 - 5:20 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Anaheim Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne became the franchise's all-time scoring leader when he assisted on rookie Ryan Carter's goal 4:36 into the second period in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames.

"It's a nice compliment," Selanne said. "I'm not a big stat guy. The numbers don't really mean much right now. Some day when I look back on what I achieved here, then it's going to be more special. Right now, it's not a big deal. The win was most important."

Selanne has 670 points in seven seasons with Anaheim, breaking a tie with former Ducks and current St. Louis Blues left wing Paul Kariya. The "Finnish Flash" already holds the team record with 314 career goals.

After sitting out the first half of the season, Selanne signed a one-year contract with the defending champion Ducks on January 28. He has one goal and three assists in seven games this season.

Selanne said he wasn't pressing for the record.

"I didn't even think about it too much," Selanne said. "I knew it was going to come sooner or later. I'm just trying to get back in normal game shape."

"He should be proud of it, but there is pressure that goes with it to get it," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "The longer it extends, the more pressure builds on it. For Teemu, we think it won't take him too long to find the back of the net."

The 37-year-old Selanne registered a team-high 94 points for Anaheim last season and finished third in the league with 48 goals.

Selanne also led the Ducks in power-play goals (25) and game-winners (10) in 2006-07 while becoming the oldest player in NHL history to score more than 45 goals in a season.

In 21 playoff contests, Selanne registered five goals and 10 assists, including the overtime game-winner in Game Five of the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings.

A 10-time All-Star and former Maurice Richard Trophy winner, Selanne has recorded 541 goals and 598 assists in 14 seasons with four different clubs.
