Red Wings D Chelios leaves game

Feb 23, 2008 - 6:50 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios left Friday night's contest against the Calgary Flames in the first period with an apparent right foot injury.

Chelios, who did not return to the game and will be re-evaluated Saturday, took a shot by Flames defenseman Adrian Aucoin off the foot in the first minute of the contest. He played several more shifts in obvious pain before leaving the game.

"He got hit with something off his bone," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "I don't know exactly what the scoop is. They say it's pain tolerance or something like that. We'll know more (on Saturday)."

The 46-year-old Chelios, the oldest player in the NHL, has two goals and nine points in 58 games this season.

The Red Wings already are without All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who is expected to miss three weeks with a sprained right knee. Fellow blue-liners Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall also are sidelined.
