Red Wings could be without Chelios
Feb 23, 2008 - 4:43 PM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings' lengthy injury list may have another member.Chris Chelios was knocked out of Friday's 1-0 loss to the Calgary Flames with a contusion and his status for Saturday's contest at Vancouver is uncertain.
The 46-year-old defenseman took a hit from Calgary's Adrian Aucoin to his right knee in the opening minutes of the game. He played two more shifts but did not return after the first period.
After the game, Chelios told the Detroit Free Press that he did not think he would be able to play against the Canucks.
While the Red Wings still lead the NHL in points with 89, they have struggled of late, losing seven of their last eight games, and their injury situation is a major factor in their recent poor play.
Chelios' absence would weaken a defense that already is without Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lindstrom (knee), Brian Rafalski (groin) and Niklas Kronwall (clavicle).
Lidstrom is expected to miss another two weeks with a sprained knee suffered at Colorado on Monday, while goaltender Dominik Hasek remains sidelined with a hip flexor.
No one has shouted yet.
