Report: Bruins C Savard has broken back

Mar 26, 2008 - 10:18 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Bruins center Mark Savard has a broken bone in his back and will miss at least one more game, according to a report Wednesday by the Boston Herald.

Citing a "well-placed" team source, the newspaper reported that Savard has a minor cracked bone called a transverse process. According to the report, the injury likely will not sideline Savard long-term.

Boston's leading scorer, Savard suffered the injury Saturday against Montreal and missed Tuesday's 6-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Herald claimed that Savard, 30, will definitely miss Thursday's rematch with the Maple Leafs. The long-term absence of Savard could prove costly for the Bruins (38-28-10), who have 86 points and are battling for a postseason spot in the Eastern Conference.

Boston currently is eighth in the East standings, two points behind the seventh-place Philadelphia Flyers (39-28-10) and two ahead of the ninth-place Washington Capitals (38-31-8).

A first-time All-Star this season, Savard has 15 goals and 63 assists in 74 games.

The shorthanded Bruins also could be without right wing Chuck Kobasew for Thursday's contest.

Boston's second-leading goal scorer, Kobasew underwent a CT scan Wednesday on his injured left foot, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Kobasew, 25, has 22 goals and 17 assists this season.
