Senators lose RW Alfredsson, C Fisher in win

Apr 4, 2008 - 5:58 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators' 8-2 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday did not come without a price.

The Senators lost two key players as captain Daniel Alfredsson and center Mike Fisher were injured in the blowout win.

Alfredsson had a pair of assists before being knocked out of the game by a vicious hit from Mark Bell with 2:13 remaining in the first. Bell delivered a shoulder to the side of the unsuspecting Swede's head.

The 36-year-old Alfredsson returned for one shift in the second period before leaving for good. He is unlikely to play in the Senators regular-season finale against the Boston Bruins on Friday.

Meanwhile, Fisher suffered a left leg injury in the first period and did not return.

Ottawa coach Bryan Murray called the injuries "significant" and was unsure of his players' status when and if the Senators qualify for the postseason.

The Senators (43-30-8) currently are the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the New York Rangers (42-27-11). Ottawa was denied a chance to clinch a playoff berth by virtue of Washington's win over Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Alfredsson, who has missed time with a hip flexor this season, has 40 goals and 49 assists in 70 games.

Fisher has recorded 23 goals and 24 assists in 79 contests.
