Senators RW Alfredsson, C Fisher out for 'weeks'

Apr 4, 2008 - 6:24 PM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators' 8-2 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday did not come without a price.

The club announced Friday that captain Daniel Alfredsson and center Mike Fisher will be sidelined for the foreseeable with knee injuries suffered in the blowout victory.

"I don't know the time frame, but it's going to be awhile," Senators coach Bryan Murray said. "We're talking weeks for both of them."

With one game left, the Senators (43-30-8) currently are the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the New York Rangers (42-27-11). Ottawa was denied a chance to clinch a playoff berth by virtue of Washington's win over Tampa Bay on Thursday.

"This is the fun time of year. This is what you wait for," Alfredsson said. "It's obviously very frustrating that I'm not going to be able to play for a few weeks but I'm hoping I can come back quick and help out."

Alfredsson had a pair of assists before being knocked out of the game by a vicious hit from Mark Bell with 2:13 remaining in the first. Bell delivered a shoulder to the side of the unsuspecting Swede's head.

The 36-year-old left wing returned for one shift in the second period before leaving for good.

Alfredsson, who has missed time with a hip flexor this season, has 40 goals and 49 assists in 70 games.

Meanwhile, Fisher suffered a left leg injury in the first period and did not return.

"It's disappointing for sure, but I'm going to try to get back as soon as I can," said Fisher, who has 23 goals and 24 assists in 79 contests. "I'm going to be back sooner than expected, I hope. We'll see. Obviously, it's not good at this point but I'm going to do whatever it takes."
