Sens D Volchenkov leaves game
Apr 10, 2008 - 5:27 AM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Ottawa Senators defenseman Anton Volchenkov left Wednesday's 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game One of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals midway through the second period after being hit in the head with a shot. With Pittsburgh on a power play, Evgeni Malkin unleashed a slap shot from above the left faceoff circle that struck Volchenkov in the head as the Russian blue-liner was falling to the ice in an attempt to block the puck.
After being attended to by the Senators' trainer, the bloodied Volchenkov retreated to the locker room while holding a towel against his face. He received stitches in his forehead and did not return.
"I guess they call it a pressure cut," Ottawa coach Bryan Murray said of Volchenkov's injury. "It was quite severe. He couldn't put his helmet on at the time. He was sore, but hopefully he'll be OK tomorrow. The puck hit his helmet and then drove it back into his head."
