Flames, C Langkow have deal in place

Jun 18, 2008 - 1:16 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Daymond Langkow apparently will not be testing the open market this summer.

According to a report by the Calgary Sun on Tuesday, Langkow has a deal in place to return to the Calgary Flames.

The new contract is rumored to pay Langkow $5 million per season. But the Sun is reporting the deal likely will not be announced until after July 1, when the free-agency period begins and teams can be 10 percent over the salary cap - which is believed to have a ceiling of $56 million - in order to adjust their rosters.

Flames general manager Darryl Sutter confirmed he has a deal worked out with Langkow when he met with the media to discuss the upcoming draft, which takes place Friday and Saturday in Ottawa.

"I don't know what the update would be on Langkow other than we do - Daymond and I - have an agreement. Everything else other people are reporting is wrong. ... I'm a pretty honorable guy, and I think he is, too."

Drafted fifth overall by Tampa Bay in 1995, Langkow posted his second consecutive 30-goal season in 2007-08 and added 35 assists for 65 points in 80 games. The 31-year-old Edmonton native has registered 224 goals and 331 assists in 868 career contests with the Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes and Flames.
