Report: Preds, D Weber close to deal

Jun 23, 2008 - 4:29 PM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Nashville Predators and Shea Weber reportedly are closing in on a new contract that would prevent the defenseman from becoming a restricted free agent.

Weber is on the verge of signing a multi-year contract with the Predators, according to a report published Monday by The Tennessean.

The Tennessean, which did not disclose financial details of the contract, reported that the deal could be finalized as early as Monday. The Predators and Weber's agent, Don Meehan, did not immediately provide comment when contacted by PA SportsTicker.

"All I know is that things are going good so far," Weber told The Tennessean. "Hopefully we'll get something done soon."

But according to TSN of Canada, the Predators and Weber already have agreed in principle to terms of the contract. Citing anonymous sources, the web site claimed that the British Columbia native will receive a three-year deal worth $4.5 million.

Weber, 22, appeared in 54 contests last season for the Predators, collecting six goals and 14 assists in a campaign shortened by injuries. The 6-3 blue-liner also had a goal and three assists in six playoff games this year.

A second-round draft selection in 2003, Weber has 25 goals and 45 assists in parts of three seasons with the Predators.
