Ducks re-sign Perry to five-year deal

Jul 1, 2008 - 5:02 PM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Corey Perry is staying with the Anaheim Ducks.

Perry opted to remain with the Ducks - the only NHL team for which he ever has played - on Tuesday, signing a five-year contract through the 2012-13 season.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN of Canada reported the deal is worth $26.625 million, including $8 million in signing bonuses.

If those figures are accurate, the deal certainly would constitute a heavy financial commitment to the 23-year-old Perry, Anaheim's leading goal-scorer and a first-time All-Star last season.

"Corey is one of the top young players in the NHL today," Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "He's a true Duck, a hard-nosed goal-scorer who's difficult to play against."

Despite missing 12 games with a knee injury last season, Perry established career highs in goals (29), points (54) and plus-minus (plus-12). After a six-week absence due to the knee injury, Perry returned for the final three games of Anaheim's Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Dallas Stars.

The 28th overall selection in the 2003 draft, Perry has recorded 59 goals and 64 assists in parts of three seasons. The Ontario native emerged as a star player during Anaheim's Stanley Cup run in 2007, when he scored six goals and 15 points in 21 playoff games.
