Flames sign RW Bertuzzi

Jul 7, 2008 - 5:05 PM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames signed right wing Todd Bertuzzi to a one-year contract on Monday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bertuzzi, 33, registered 14 goals and 26 assists with the Anaheim Ducks last season, but was released so the Ducks could re-sign restricted free agent Corey Perry. Bertuzzi had signed a two-year, $8 million with Anaheim last summer.

A native of Ontario, Bertuzzi has played for 12 seasons in the NHL, totaling 240 goals and 340 assists with the Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks.

The two-time All-Star scored a career-high 46 goals and registered 97 points with the Canucks during the 2002-03 season.

"Todd is a proven scorer with the ability to play both wings," Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said. "He expressed to us that he wanted to play in Canada and that desire along with signing him to a one-year deal was important to our philosophy.

"He wanted to play on a good team and it fit our money. Additionally, our captain, Jarome Iginla, was a strong supporter of Todd and wanted him on our team."

Bertuzzi is infamously remembered for an on-ice attack from behind on Colorado Avalanche center Steve Moore on March 8, 2004. Bertuzzi had punced Moore and jumped on his back, sending him face first down to the ice.

Moore suffered a concussion and three broken vertebrae and has not appeared in the league since.

Bertuzzi was handed an indefinite suspension but was later reinstated by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on August 8, 2005.
