Stars extend contract of Tippett

Jul 14, 2008 - 6:30 PM FRISCO, Texas (Ticker) -- After guiding the Dallas Stars to the Western Conference finals, coach Dave Tippett was rewarded with a two-year contract extension on Monday.

Financial terms of the deal, which keeps Tippett under contract with the Stars through the 2010-11 campaign, were not disclosed. Tippett, who completed his sixth season as the team's coach, had been signed to a one-year contract through the 2008-09 season.

He has a 235-127-48 mark with the Stars, the best record of an active coach in the NHL. Dallas has made the playoffs in all six of his seasons.

"Dave Tippett has done an exceptional job as head coach of this hockey club," Dallas co-general manager Les Jackson said. "We are looking forward to getting back to work in preparation for the 2008-09 season."

Last season, the Stars reached the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2000, losing in six games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

"Dave has proven to be a great leader on the Stars bench and we are pleased to have him under contract for the next three seasons," Stars co-general manager Brett Hull said.

Tippett was named the 19th head coach in Stars franchise history on May 21, 2002.
