Islanders reach deal with C Nielsen

Jul 19, 2008 - 1:39 PM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) - The New York Islanders on Saturday agreed to terms with center Frans Nielsen on a four-year contract worth $2.1 million.

Nielsen split last season between the Islanders and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. In 16 games with the Islanders, he had three points. While with Bridgeport, Nielsen was the team's fourth-leading scorer with 10 goals and 38 points in 48 games.

"We're excited to have Frans locked up for the next four years," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said. "We know he is going to come to training camp in great shape and ready to compete for his spot on the team."

Nielsen made his NHL debut on January 6, 2007, becoming the first Danish player in league history. Originally drafted by the Islanders in the third round of the 2002 draft, he has five points in 31 career NHL games.
