TORONTO (Ticker) -- Defenseman Luke Schenn, the Toronto Maple Leafs' first-round pick in this year's draft, has earned a spot on the team's opening day roster.
The fifth overall selection in the draft, the 18-year-old Schenn had an excellent training camp for the Maple Leafs, recording a goal and a plus-3 rating in seven games.
The Saskatchewan native is considered a likely candidate to join Team Canada later this year for the World Junior Championships.
In another move, the Maple Leafs placed left wing Mark Bell on waivers. The 28-year-old Ontario native recorded four goals and six assists in only 35 games for Toronto last season.
Bell missed two months while recovering from a broken orbital bone and also served a 15-game suspension for a drunk-driving conviction.
