TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Luke Schenn to a three-year contract on Tuesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The fifth overall selection in this past June's draft, the 18-year-old Schenn had an excellent training camp for the Maple Leafs, earning a spot on the opening-day roster. He recorded one goal and a plus-3 rating in seven games.
"Luke's got a bright future in the NHL and we are very excited to have him signed to a contract," Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher said. "He had a great training camp during which he demonstrated a lot of poise and skill for a young defenseman."
The Saskatchewan native is considered a likely candidate to join Team Canada later this year for the World Junior Championship.
In 2007-08, Schenn recorded seven goals and 21 assists in 57 games for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.
