BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday placed center Paul Gaustad on injured reserve after he underwent surgery on September 30 to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.
Gaustad, 26, suffered the injury during a fight in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild on September 28 and recently told the Buffalo News he could be sidelined for six weeks.
The North Dakota native played in all 82 games last season, his third with the Sabres. He recorded a career-high 10 goals and 26 assists.
In another move, the Sabres assigned defenseman Mike Weber, 20, to Portland of the American Hockey League. Weber played in all seven of Buffalo's preseason games without scoring.
Buffalo's second-round pick in the 2006 draft, he recorded three assists in 16 contests with the Sabres last season.
The Sabres open their regular season on Friday, when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
