SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Unfortunately for Jeff Friesen, you apparently can't go home again.

Friesen on Thursday had his hopes of returning to his original team dashed as the San Jose Sharks released him from his tryout agreement.

Drafted 11th overall by San Jose in 1994, Friesen was looking to win a spot on the roster of the club for which he spent the first 6 1/2 seasons of his NHL career. But the 32-year-old left wing, who last appeared in the NHL with Calgary in 2006-07, had his dream ended after recording one assist in three preseason games.

"Jeff had a very good camp and he should be proud of his effort and his commitment," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "However, at this time, we are moving forward with our 23-man roster as announced yesterday. We wish Jeff nothing but the best in the future, and he will always have a special place within the San Jose Sharks family."

A member of the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1995, Friesen has recorded 218 goals and 298 assists in 893 career games with the Sharks, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals and Flames. The native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan enjoyed his best campaign with San Jose in 1997-98, when he notched career highs of 31 goals and 63 points.

Friesen, who registered a goal and four assists in five games with Lake Erie of the American Hockey League last season, was a member of New Jersey's Stanley Cup championship team in 2003.
