DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings on Monday placed veteran right wing Darren McCarty on waivers, according to a published report.

The Detroit News reported that if the 36-year-old clears waivers, he could be sent to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. All other NHL clubs have until noon on Tuesday to claim McCarty, who has been part of four Stanley Cup championships with the Red Wings.

McCarty, who had been recovering from a groin injury, has spent 12 of his 14 seasons in the NHL with Detroit. He has not played in a regular season NHL game since March 31 of last season, during which he notched one assist over three appearances. In the playoffs, he recorded a goal and an assist in 17 playoff games.

The veteran has recorded 126 goals and 161 assists in 745 career games with the Red Wings and Calgary Flames.
