Capitals ink D Erskine to extension

Oct 23, 2008 - 11:27 PM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- John Erskine apparently has found a home in Washington.

Currently in his third season with the club, Erskine on Thursday signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

A second-round pick of Dallas in 1998, Erskine never was able to win a regular spot on the Stars' blue line and was traded to the New York Islanders in January 2005. The 28-year-old signed with the Capitals in September 2006 and appeared in 51 games with the team last season, recording two goals, a career-high seven assists and 96 penalty minutes.

The 6-4, 218-pound native of Kingston, Ontario, who would have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, has notched one assist and 11 penalty minutes in five games thus far this campaign.

Erskine has skated in 226 career contests with the Stars, Islanders and Capitals, registering six goals, 16 assists and 512 penalty minutes.
