Senators sign RW Alfredsson to extension

Oct 30, 2008 - 6:53 PM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators ensured that right wing Daniel Alfredsson finishes his career with the franchise.

The Senators re-signed their captain and franchise's all-time leading scorer to a four-year contract extension Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN of Canada is reporting that the extension will pay Alfredsson $21.6 million and includes a no-movement clause.

"The Senators organization and the city of Ottawa have embraced both me and my family as part of this community," Alfredsson said. "It's an exciting time for our family to know that we'll be able to spend the rest of my NHL career in Ottawa."

"With today's signing, I deliver on a promise to our fans and to Daniel that I would make him a Senator for life," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk added. "Daniel's leadership and on-ice skills make him one of the best all-around players in the National Hockey League."

By keeping Alfredsson in the fold, the Senators also will lockup another of their core players after previously signing Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley to new deals last year.

Alfredsson, 35, is the franchise leader in most offensive categories including goals (334), assists (522), points (856) and games played (861).

"Daniel is the type of person and player that we want to continue building this franchise around," Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray said. "We are happy to have him here to lead our team towards the goal of bringing a Stanley Cup to Ottawa."

In 1995-96, Alfredsson made an immediate impact with the Senators as he won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie when he registered 25 goals and 61 points in 82 games. He has reached the 25-goal plateau seven times in his career, including in each of the last seven campaigns.

While he helped build the Senators into one of the league's elite teams, Alfredsson also has enjoyed Olympic success with his native Sweden whom he led to the gold medal at the 2006 Games.
