Devils D Greene out with broken hand

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:10 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils will be without Andy Greene for a while, as the defenseman suffered a broken right hand in Wednesday's 6-5 shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Greene, who recorded a career-high three assists in the setback, was hit in the hand on a shot by Toronto blue-liner Pavel Kubina in the first period but remained in the game. The 26-year-old native of Trenton, Michigan underwent surgery on Friday and will miss four to six weeks.

"I knew he was banged up. I didn't know, and he didn't know, until (Thursday) how significant it was," Devils coach Brent Sutter told the Newark Star-Ledger. "It's too bad with Greenie because he was playing very well."

Signed as a free agent out of Miami (Ohio) University in April 2006, Greene has recorded one goal and five assists in six games this season. The 5-11, 195-pounder has registered four tallies and 22 points in 88 career contests over three campaigns with New Jersey.
