Semin wins "First Star" of the month

Nov 3, 2008 - 9:30 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Semin was named the NHL's "First Star" of the month Sunday.

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber were also honored.

Semin notched eight goals and 16 points with a plus-7 rating over nine games, helping the Capitals post a 5-3-1 record during October. He notched six multi-point contests over the month, which is one shy of his 2007-08 season total.

Semin is currently ranked second in the NHL behind Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin in points. The Russian matched the most points by a Capital through nine games of a season, tying Dale Hunter's mark in 1991.

Lunqvist posted an 8-2-1 record with a 1.99 goals-against average and .928 save percentage, backstopping the Rangers to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. He allowed two goals or less nine times on the month en route to collecting the "Second Star."

Weber picked up the "Third Star" after leading all defensemen with 11 points last month. He had five goals and a plus-5 rating as the Predators went 5-4-1 record during October.
