Blues LW Kariya to undergo hip surgery

Dec 28, 2008 - 2:51 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- St. Louis Blues left wing Paul Kariya will have surgery on his left hip and could miss the remainder of the season.

Kariya, who was injured in a game against the Anaheim Ducks on November 5, has two goals and 13 assists in 11 games this season.

The 34-year-old Kariya is in the second year of the three-year, $18 million contract he signed with the Blues in July 2007. During his first campaign with the club, he registered 16 goals and 49 assists in 82 games.

Drafted fourth overall by Anaheim in 1993, Kariya has notched 384 goals and 563 assists in 915 career games with the Mighty Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators and Blues.

A seven-time All-Star who has won two Lady Byng Trophies and claimed the Hobey Baker Award in 1993, Kariya has eclipsed the 30-goal mark seven times, netting a career-high 50 with Anaheim in 1995-96. The native of Vancouver represented Canada in two Winter Olympics and led the Mighty Ducks to within one win of the Stanley Cup championship in 2003.
