Capitals LW Ovechkin receives weekly honor

Dec 29, 2008 - 4:36 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin on Monday was named the NHL's "First Star" of the week.

Ovechkin collected five goals and an assist as the Capitals went 3-0-0 and extended their Southeast Division lead to 10 points.

The reigning Hart Trophy winner, Ovechkin had two goals and one assist as Washington overcame a four-goal deficit to defeat the New York Rangers, 5-4, in overtime on Tuesday. The Russian also scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Ovechkin capped his week by scoring a pair of goals in Sunday's 4-1 triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

For the season, Ovechkin ranks second in the NHL in scoring with 25 goals and 24 assists in 35 games.

Atlanta Thrashers center Bryan Little, who tallied a league-best six goals last week, was named the "Second Star."

The "Third Star" went to Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, who posted a 2-1-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against-average and two shutouts in three games last week.
