Sens recall G Elliott, demote D Carkner

Jan 10, 2009 - 12:01 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators made a pair of moves Friday, recalling goaltender Brian Elliott from Binghamton and assigning defenseman Matt Carkner to their American Hockey League affiliate.

A ninth-round pick in 2003, Elliott has posted an 18-8-1 record with two shutouts and a 2.31 goals-against average in 30 games with Binghamton this season. The 23-year-old native of Newmarket, Ontario made his NHL debut last campaign, posting the win in Ottawa's 3-1 triumph over the Atlanta Thrashers on October 10, 2007.

Carkner, 28, appeared in his first game as a Senator on Thursday, collecting 4 minutes, 8 seconds of ice time in Ottawa's 6-4 loss to the Boston Bruins. In 24 contests with Binghamton this season, the 6-4, 231-pound native of Winchester, Ontario has registered one goal, 10 assists and 70 penalty minutes.

Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 1999 draft, Carkner recorded an assist and two penalty minutes in one game with the San Jose Sharks in 2005-06.
