Report: Bruins LW Sturm could miss remainder of season

Jan 10, 2009 - 12:52 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Bruins left wing Marco Sturm could miss the remainder of the season after undergoing left knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus, according to a published report on Friday.

The Boston Herald reported Sturm's campaign could be over if the anterior cruciate ligament also needs repairing. His doctors will not know for sure until they go into the knee on Tuesday.

Sturm's current status, coupled with the injury to Patrice Bergeron, has the Bruins without two of their top six forwards. But general manager Peter Chiarelli apparently is not ready to pull the trigger on a trade in order to compensate for the losses.

"From the time that they've been gone, I think we've lost two or three games," Chiarelli told the newspaper. "I'm not going to hang my hat on that record, but first I'm going to look to our depth and players within the organization, and secondly, I'll look outside the organization. But right now, I'm not actively pursuing anybody."

A native of Dingolfing, Germany, Sturm has recorded seven goals and six assists in 19 games this season for the Bruins.

Drafted 21st overall by San Jose in 1996, Sturm has collected 212 goals and 217 assists in 779 games with the Sharks and Bruins over his 11-year career.
