Senators RW Alfredsson makes good on friendly wager

Jan 20, 2009 - 1:10 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Daniel Alfredsson certainly is a man of his word.

For two straight years, the proud Swede predicted that his countrymen would best Canada and emerge victorious in the World Junior Championship.

For two straight years, Alfredsson has been proven wrong.

The 36-year-old Alfredsson made good on his friendly wager on Monday by shoveling teammate Shean Donovan's backyard rink.

With his eldest son Hugo in tow, Alfredsson and company did the deed to the satisfaction of Donovan.

"(Alfredsson) did a good job," Donovan said. "I guess he's learned maybe not to bet against Canada. Maybe he won't (again), I don't know. But he did a good job. It was a pretty fun bet."

Had Sweden won, the shovel would've been in the other hand.

"Thank God Canada won because he's got a rink about seven times the size of this one," Donovan said. "It would have been pretty ugly going the other way. Good thing Canada won."
