Green ties goal-scoring streak record by defenseman
Feb 12, 2009 - 1:54 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green just cannot be stopped.Green extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games Wednesday, when he tallied in the second period of Washington's game against the New York Rangers.
With the goal, Green tied the NHL record for the longest goal-scoring run by a defenseman set by Mike O'Connell during the 1983-84 season.
The 23-year-old Green gave the Capitals a 3-2 edge with 9:28 remaining in the middle session, taking a pass from All-Star Alex Ovechkin at the left point and beating screened goaltender Henrik Lundqvist with a wrist shot.
A native of Calgary, Green netted another goal with 58 seconds left in the period, scoring his 21st of the season off a drop pass from Michael Nylander. The blue-liner unleashed a slap shot from the left faceoff circle that sailed past Lundqvist to tie the contest at 4-4.
Selected 24th overall by Washington in the 2004 draft, Green has recorded nine goals and 16 points over his remarkable stretch.
