Flames RW Iginla breaks franchise mark

Mar 2, 2009 - 4:24 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla became the franchise's all-time points leader on Sunday, recording two goals and three assists in an 8-6 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Iginla now has 834 points over his 12-year career, surpassing Theoren Fleury's total of 830. He also owns the Flames' record for most games played at 922.

"I never imagined staying this long," Iginla said. "But it's been a great time and I've got to play with some good players over that time.

"To get it at home was special to me. The crowd was great. But unfortunately, it didn't go the way we wanted. Looking back at it, it's still going to be a good night, I'll appreciate it for sure."

The 31-year-old All-Star netted the 399th goal of his career with 4:16 remaining in the first period, stuffing a rebound past Tampa Bay rookie goaltender Mike McKenna. David Moss and Mike Cammalleri assisted on the play.

Iginla moved ahead of Fleury at 8:07 of the second, assisting on Craig Conroy's tip-in of defenseman Dion Phaneuf's shot from the point. He also had an assist on Cammalleri's power-play goal with 6:58 left in the second period.

The Flames captain scored goal No. 400 just 14 seconds into the third period and later assisted on Todd Bertuzzi's goal with 3:14 to play in the contest.

A first-round pick by the Dallas Stars in 1995, Iginla has registered 26 goals and a team-high 72 points this season.
