RW Neil staying with Senators

Mar 4, 2009 - 11:13 PM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Contrary to a previous published report, right wing Chris Neil is staying in Ottawa - at least through the end of the regular season.

Neil was prepared to be traded and NHL.com earlier reported that he had been sent to Florida. However, Wednesday's deadline passed with no deal being made.

"I'm happy I'm still in Ottawa," Neil told the Ottawa Sun. "I'm just glad I didn't have to pack up and move shop."

Still, Neil could leave the Senators at the conclusion of the season as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The 29-year-old is making $1.2 million this season, but it's believed he is seeking $2.5 million in a new deal.

"I want to stay in Ottawa," Neil said. "It's been my goal, my priority. I'm an emotional guy and I wear my heart on my sleeve. Like I said before, my heart is in Ottawa."

Neil has spent his entire seven-year career in Ottawa, but he has just two goals and four assists in 44 games this season. He has not played since February 7 due to a leg laceration.
