Leafs G Toskala undergoes surgery

Mar 10, 2009 - 11:42 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala underwent surgery Monday evening to repair a torn labrum in his hip, the team announced Tuesday.

The procedure was performed at the Vail Valley Surgery Center in Vail, Colorado by Dr. Marc Philippon. Toskala is expected to need 12 weeks to rehabilitate the hip.

The 31-year-old Finn went 22-17-11 with one shutout and a 3.26 goals-against average in 53 games this season, his second with the Maple Leafs. A fourth-round pick of San Jose in 1995, Toskala owns a 120-70-27 record with 12 blankings and a 2.67 GAA in 234 career contests with San Jose and Toronto.

Also on Tuesday, the Maple Leafs announced defenseman Mike Van Ryn suffered a torn MCL in his left knee in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The 29-year-old native of London, Ontario, who has recorded three goals and eight assists in 27 games in his first campaign with Toronto, will not undergo surgery but will need 10 weeks to recover.

Blue-liner Jonas Frogren sustained a sprained MCL in the setback to Edmonton and will be sidelined for four weeks. The 28-year-old Swede has registered a goal and six assists in 41 games during his first season in North America.
