Bruins D Hunwick taken to hospital

Apr 18, 2009 - 4:43 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins likely will have to attempt to take a two-games-to-none lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Montreal Canadiens without one of their defensemen.

Following a team meeting Saturday morning, Matt Hunwick was taken to the hospital to be checked for a spleen injury.

"He didn't feel very good, and our trainers did what was right and called an ambulance," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Hopefully, we can get some good news here as we move on."

The 23-year-old Hunwick saw 15 minutes, 59 seconds of action in Boston's 4-2 victory over Montreal in the series opener on Thursday, registering two shots on goal and blocking two of the Canadiens' attempts.

A seventh-round pick in 2004, Hunwick recorded six goals, 21 assists and 31 penalty minutes in 53 games during the regular season. The 5-11, 190-pound native of Warren, Michigan made his NHL debut last campaign, notching one assist and four penalty minutes in 13 contests.
