Adebayor hits winner for Man City

LONDON (SE) - Mark Hughes says it is only a matter of time before Manchester City go on a scoring frenzy after Emmanuel Adebayor struck for the second time in as many games to defeat Wolves 1-0 on Saturday.

Adebayor maintained big spending City's 100 per cent start to the season with a well-taken 17th minute winner, created by fellow new arrival Carlos Tevez.

The home side wasted a host of glorious chances to make the victory more emphatic.

Hughes, on the verge of completing a 22 million pounds swoop for Everton defender Joleon Lescott, said: "We made numerous chances in the first half and probably should have put the game to bed.

"We probably had six or seven good chances to two for Wolves.

"The important thing is we are creating them and we have some wonderful attack-minded players. When it all clicks I am sure we will score lots of goals.

"We have had a great start to the season and are showing good qualities."

Tevez made his full City debut after recovering from a heel injury, with Craig Bellamy dropping to the substitutes bench.

Wolves' 6.5 million pounds record signing Kevin Doyle was fit enough for a place on the bench after overcoming a groin problem.

Tevez made an instant impression on his new set of supporters by setting up Adebayor for City's winner.

Wayne Bridge crossed from the left and Tevez cushioned the ball beautifully to the feet of Adebayor, who slotted home at the near post for his second goal in as many games.

Wolves almost drew level against the run of play five minutes before half time when Matt Jarvis unleashed a 25-yard curler, which was heading for the top corner before Shay Given got back to claw the ball away.

Tevez should have opened his City account moments before the interval after being picked out by Gareth Barry's left wing cross but the Argentine put a free header wide from eight yards.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy brought on Doyle for the start of the second half in a bid to snatch an unlikely point.

Stephen Ireland wasted a gilt-edged chance to put the game beyond the top-flight newcomers' reach in the 58th minute.

Ireland played a clever one-two with Robinho on the edge of the penalty area but let Wolves off the hook by flicking a tame shot wide from close range.

Adebayor gave Wolves another let off soon after, being played in by Ireland and rounding goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey before firing wastefully into the side netting.

Wolves boss McCarthy said: "We gave them too much respect at first and they had lots of chances, but in the second half we played well and could have got something out of it.

"I don't know if we would have deserved it, as they missed a lot of chances but we had a go after the break at least, played really well and really put a shift in.

"They missed a load of chances but I was proud of the performance, especially in the second half."
