Feyenoord beats Roda JC to join FC Twente on top

Aug 23, 2009 - 4:40 PM AMSTERDAM(AP) -- Feyenoord joined FC Twente at the top of the Dutch league after beating Roda JC 4-0 on Sunday.

Feyenoord and Twente jointly lead the standings with 10 points each. Defending champion AZ Alkmaar has nine, PSV Eindhoven eight and Ajax seven.

Bryan Ruiz combined with Blaise Nkufo to give Twente an 18th-minute lead before Nkufo added another from a header in FC Twente's 2-1 win over RKC Waalwijk. Charlison Benschop pulled one back for RKC on the hour.

Jonathan de Guzman grabbed two goals for Feyenoord while Sekou Cisse and Jon Dahl Tomasson each scored for the Rotterdam side.

Ajax created more than a dozen chances at the Amsterdam Arena but failed to break down Sparta Rotterdam's defense as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Defending champion AZ won 2-0 at SC Heerenveen for its third successive victory. AZ took the lead in the 30th when Martin Lejsal put the ball into his own net and Mounir El Hamdaoui got the second in the 64th after collecting a Maarten Martens pass.

Also Sunday, PSV beat NAC Breda 3-1. Captain Edwin de Graaf scored after eight minutes converting Tim Gilissen's pass to put NAC in front but Danny Koevermans netted two second half goals and Ibrahim Afellay added another to give PSV the win.

NEC Nijmegen vs. FC Utrecht was postponed after Nijmegen mayor Thom de Graaf complained there was inadequate policing for the game due to holidays. The match has been rescheduled for Sept. 30.

On Saturday, it was: VVV-Venlo 2, FC Groningen 2; Vitesse Arnhem 1, ADO The Hague 3; and Willem II 0, Heracles Almelo 1.
