Portugal reaches World Cup for 3rd time in row
Nov 18, 2009 - 9:52 PM ZENICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina(AP) -- Portugal qualified for the World Cup for the third time in a row on Wednesday, beating Bosnia 1-0 thanks to Raul Meireles' second-half goal in the second leg.Portugal beat Bosnia 1-0 on Saturday in the first leg in Lisbon on a goal by Bruno Alves.
Nani's pass found Meireles, whose low shot in the 56th minute sent Portugal to South Africa next year. The Portuguese advanced despite not having star Cristiano Ronaldo for either game; he's sidelined with an ankle injury.
Portugal lost to France in the 2006 World Cup semifinals.
