Bayern held to 1-1 draw at next-to-last Nuremberg

Feb 21, 2010 - 12:34 AM FRANKFURT (AP) - Bayern Munich's 13-game winning streak ended Saturday with a 1-1 draw at next-to-last Nuremberg in the Bundesliga.

Bayern has 49 points but could be knocked back to second place by Bayer Leverkusen, which has 48 and plays at Werder Bremen on Sunday. Third-place Schalke has 45 and also plays Sunday, at slumping defending champion Wolfsburg.

Also Saturday, Stuttgart won 5-1 in Cologne after four goals from Cacau. Borussia Dortmund routed Hannover 4-1, Eintracht Frankfurt drew 0-0 at Hamburger SV and Mainz drew 0-0 at home with Bochum. Freiburg plays Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

Having won 13 straight games in all competitions - nine of them in the Bundesliga - Bayern went into the Bavarian derby as the heavy favorite against a team batting relegation.

Nuremberg defended well, however.

Bayern's Thomas Mueller broke the deadlock in the 38th minute off a pass from Mario Gomez.

Ilkay Gundogan used one of Nuremberg's few chances to equalize in the 54th. Bayern goalkeeper Joerg Butt could not hold a sharp shot by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Gundogan knocked the rebound into the net.

Bayern kept pressing but Nuremberg central defender Breno, a Brazilian on loan from Bayern, played a virtually error-free match and shut down Bayern's strikers.

Mario Gomez broke through once but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer.

"We played well but they defended with 11 men and we did not use the many chances we created," Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said.

Bayern missed winger Franck Ribery, who did not play because of a bruised leg, and Arjen Robben did not return for the second half.

Hamburger SV was without newly signed striker Ruud van Nistelrooy due to a thigh injury, and could not wear down Frankfurt's well-organized team. Hamburg remained fourth on 40 points and Frankfurt is a surprising sixth.

Dortmund ended a three-game losing run by pounding hapless Hannover, which lost its eighth straight match.

Neven Subotic, Nelson Valdez and Kevin Grosskreutz scored for Dortmund, with Mario Eggimann compounding Hannover's problems with an own-goal. Arouna Kone scored a consolation goal for Hannover.

In Cologne, the home team was jeered by its own fans, who began leaving stadium early in the second half after seeing their side routed by Stuttgart.

Striker Cacau, who missed four weeks with a groin injury, celebrated his return by scoring four goals for Stuttgart, which also got a goal from Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann made two key saves before Christopher Schorch finally managed to beat him, but Stuttgart was already three goals up by then.

On Friday, Hoffenheim came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Borussia Moenchengladbach.
