Jun 11, 2010 - 8:14 PM By ENOCK MUCHINJO Associated Press WriterMULDERSDRIFT, South Africa(AP) -- Backup Australia goalkeeper Brad Jones will not return to the World Cup after leaving the team to return home because of an illness in his family.
Jones left South Africa over the weekend and it has been widely reported in Australian media that his 4-year-old son Luca has been diagnosed with leukemia.
Australia's soccer federation said Friday that FIFA granted permission to replace the Middlesbrough goalkeeper with Adelaide United's Eugene Galekovic, who was cut from the provisional squad. Mark Schwarzer and Adam Federici are the other goalkeepers on the squad. Schwarzer, a star with Fulham, is the starter.
