Feyenoord M De Guzman suspended two games
May 11, 2007 - 5:25 PM ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands (Ticker) -- Feyenoord midfielder Jonathan De Guzman has been handed a two-match ban after his sending off against FC Groningen in Thursday night's UEFA Cup playoff match.De Guzman, 19, was also warned he could receive another one-match ban if he commits further disciplinary offenses in the future.
The Canadian was sent off after 20 minutes of Thursday's match for a nasty tackle on Groningen defender Antoine van der Linden. Feyenoord was leading 1-0 at the time, but ended up losing the game, 2-1.
Caretaker-coach Leo Beenhakker admitted after the game that De Guzman deserved to be sent off.
"It was the rash deed of a young player," he said. "Such a card he will only pick up once in his career."
No one has shouted yet.
