Ferdinand left off England Euro roster
May 16, 2012 - 4:02 PM London, England (Sports Network) - England manager Roy Hodgson announced his 23-man England squad for Euro 2012 on Wednesday, with 18-year-old Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain making the cut, while former England skipper Rio Ferdinand was left off.Oxlade-Chamberlain has yet to earn a cap with the senior team but is coming off of an impressive campaign with Arsenal in the English Premier League and has tallied four goals in eight games for England's Under-21 team.
The 33-year-old Ferdinand featured in 30 games for Manchester United this past season, but he will now likely never get a chance to play in the European Championships having missed out on the Euro 2000 team, been suspended for drugs during Euro 2004, while England failed to qualify for the 2008 edition.
Premiership champions Manchester City will send four players to the competition with goalkeeper Joe Hart, defender Joleon Lescott and midfielders James Milner and Gareth Barry.
England squad:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Rob Green (West Ham), John Ruddy (Norwich City).
Defenders: Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton).
Midfielders: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Ashley Young (Manchester United), James Milner (Manchester City).
Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool).
