MLS suspends Alvarez, fines Union and Timbers coaches
May 10, 2013 - 3:12 PM New York, NY (Sports Network) - The MLS Disciplinary Committee issued various punishments late Thursday, suspending Chivas USA's Carlos Alvarez for two matches and fining him an undisclosed amount while fining Philadelphia Union head coach John Hackworth and Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter undisclosed amounts.Alvarez's punishment comes as a result of violent conduct during Chivas USA's game against Sporting Kansas City on May 5. The incident came in the 73rd minute of the contest when he kicked the ball toward the head of Peterson Joseph, who was prone on the ground, from close range.
The midfielder will serve his suspension during Chivas USA's games on May 12th against Portland and May 19th against Real Salt Lake.
Hackworth and Porter also were fined for their public criticism of match officials.
