PSG tops Lyon to clinch Ligue 1 title
May 12, 2013 - 9:46 PM Lyon, France (Sports Network) - PSG clinched its first Ligue 1 title in 19 years on Sunday as Jeremy Menez netted the lone goal in a 1-0 PSG victory at Lyon. The result moves PSG seven points clear of second-place Marseille with two games to play, although Marseille locked up a spot in the Champions League next season with Lyon's defeat.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic came the closest to opening the scoring in the first half when his shot was cleared off the goal line by a Lyon defender, while another effort from the Swede was nicely saved by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
Lopes was called upon again to keep out a shot from Menez early in the second half, but he couldn't prevent the lone goal in the 53rd minute when Thiago Motta threaded a pass into the area for Menez, who found enough room to fire his shot inside the right post.
Javier Pastore almost doubled the lead as PSG played more on the counter, but his shot was saved by Lopes.
Lyon owns a three-point lead over both Lille and Nice, which suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Evian on Sunday behind two goals from Saber Khelifa.
Evian climbs out of the relegation zone with the win, moving two points clear of 18th-place Nancy.
The other match on Sunday saw St Etienne's European hopes take a hit with a 3-1 defeat at Lorient, leaving the club in sixth place.
