Schaaf leaves Bremen by mutual consent

May 15, 2013 - 4:25 PM Bremen, Germany (Sports Network) - Werder Bremen announced on Wednesday that manager Thomas Schaaf has left the club by mutual consent after 14 years in charge.

Bremen has endured a poor campaign with just eight wins in 33 Bundesliga games, while the club only secured its safety last weekend with a 1-1 draw against Eintracht.

"In the past few days we analyzed our sporting development and came to the conclusion that we wanted to venture a new beginning," read a statement from the club.

"We thank Thomas for everything he brought to Werder Bremen in more than 40 years of belonging to the club as a player and coach."

Schaaf helped Bremen capture a league and cup double in 2004 as well as three Pokal Cup trophies during his time at the club.

The 52-year-old joined Bremen in 1999 and also guided the team to four appearances in the Champions League, but he will not be on the bench for the team's final game of the season on Saturday against Nurnberg.
