Atletico upsets Real in Copa del Rey final
May 17, 2013 - 10:20 PM Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Atletico Madrid clawed its way from underneath Real Madrid's shadow on Friday to claim a 2-1 victory over the Merengues and seal the Copa del Rey title at the Bernabeu.Real Madrid got off the mark in the 14th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo nodded home a corner kick, but Atletico got on level terms 21 minutes later when Diego Costa latched on to Falcao's inch-perfect through ball and fired a shot past Diego Lopez.
The two sides remained level and forced extra time, allowing the visitors to steal the cup title thanks to Miranda's glancing header past Lopez at the near post in the 98th minute.
Real Madrid will feel unfortunate not to claim a piece of silverware this season after it struck the woodwork three times over the course of Friday's final.
Adding insult to injury, Real had Jose Mourinho banished to dressing before the start of extra time while Ronaldo picked up a red card in the 114th minute for kicking out at an opponent.
The triumph is Atletico's 10th in Copa del Rey action, its first title in the competition since 1996.
