Beckham marks final home match with victory
May 18, 2013 - 9:22 PM Paris, France (Sports Network) - David Beckham marked the final home match of his storied career with a win as PSG earned a 3-1 defeat of Brest at the Parc des Princes on Saturday. The English midfielder announced his plan to retire from football earlier this week, making Saturday's league tilt his final match on home turf. He captained the Ligue 1 champions but failed to mark the occasion with a goal to his name as the Parisians got off the mark through Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the fifth minute.
Blaise Matuidi doubled PSG's advantage just after the half-hour mark while Ibrahimovic grabbed a second of the match by doing his best Beckham impression and curling a free kick home in the 36th minute.
Charlison Benshop pulled one back for Brest in the 81st minute, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation strike.
PSG moves to 80 points on the season, bringing the club 10 points clear of second-place Marseille after its 2-0 loss to St. Etienne.
The picture at the bottom of the table has become even tighter given Saturday's results in the French top flight. With only three points separating 15th place from the final spot in the drop zone, any one of four clubs can be relegated next weekend.
Evian strengthened its bid to remain in Ligue 1 by picking up a well-earned 2-0 victory over Valenciennes while Troyes kept its survival hopes alive thanks to a 1-0 defeat of Bordeaux. Sochaux suffered a 2-1 loss to Toulouse to remain tied on 40 points with Evian and Ajaccio, which played to a 1-1 draw with Rennes. Troyes improves to 37 points to face a must-win situation next weekend.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1 on Saturday, a penalty from Grzegorz Krychowiak handed Reims a 1-0 win over Lorient, Anthony Modeste scored the winner in Bastia's 2-1 defeat of Nancy and Montpellier played to a 0-0 draw with Lille.
